Places to explore
The different sides of Newport can keep you homely or on your toes. Here are some ways to start by experiencing the extremes and a whole new location nearby...
Cardiff
Wales’ largest city has all the makings of a great place to visit that you would expect from the capital. There is an abundance of sport, art, music, shopping and entertainment, but also some more unique gems, such as the world’s oldest record shop and Cardiff Castle. With regular trains that take just 15 minutes, it couldn’t be easier to explore in a day.
Wentwood Forest
Wales largest ancient is home to winding paths and stunning greenery. Picnic benches, barbecue sites, and a clear plain overlooking a reservoir, Wentwood Forest is open to both exploration and relaxation.
Caerleon
Found on the outskirts of Newport, the historically significant Caerleon is the location of a notable Roman legionary fortress, along with an Iron Age hill fort. Go for a long hike across the untouched countryside and soak in the beautiful views and history for a much-deserved break.
Friars Walk
If you’re in need of a bit of retail therapy, Newport’s very own £100m shopping complex has several levels filled with high-street favourites, restaurants, bars and cafes. You’ll even find a cinema and a bowling alley - all just a short walk from the high street.
Newport Castle
Built in the 14th century by Hugh de Audley, Newport Castle is now in ruins but it once served the purpose of helping its builder cross the River Usk. It’s now a Grade II listed building and makes for a dramatic backdrop during a walk around its grounds.

How to get around
Newport has bus routes throughout the city so that navigation comes easily. Also available are connections to cities on both sides of the border. These include Bristol, London, and Cardiff. So, what’s the best way to get around Newport?
Bus
Travelling by bus is an easy and inexpensive way to get around the city and beyond, thanks to routes operated by Newport Bus, Stagecoach and Cardiff Bus. You can even take advantage of the fflecsi service which allows you to book a bus to pick you up from a location of your choice via an app.
Trains
Newport has the second busiest railway station in Wales and is located in the city centre. From here you can easily get to locations across Wales, including Cardiff which takes just 12 minutes. If you are looking to venture further afield, there are regular trains to London and you’ll be there in under one hour and 40 minutes.
